Boston marks 1-year bombing anniversary

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) -

One year after two bombs changed Boston forever the city is ready to remember.

“It's a big step in the healing process. It's the first anniversary. There are going to be a lot of survivors here and family members who lost loved ones and I think it's going to be a hard day for them,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said.

Tuesday will be an emotional day for survivors, victims, heroes and their families.

Three people were killed one year ago. Boston University Student Lingzi Lu, 8-year-old Martin Richard, and Crystal Campbell of Medford. MIT police officer Sean Collier was killed days later. Hundreds more were hurt in the bombing and many of them will attend Tuesday’s tribute at the Hynes Convention Center.

"Tribute will be paid to those we lost last year and a very, very high degree of respect will be shown to all of those who performed so magnificently and heroically last year,” Boston Athletic Association Executive Director Tom Grilk said.

Vice President Joe Biden will join Gov. Patrick and other local leaders as they speak and reflect on the day that changed Boston forever.

At the finish line between 2:30 and 3 p.m. there will be a formal flag raising ceremony and moment of silence. Everyone will notice increased security from now until after next week's marathon.

“There's going to be increased security all week. Obviously the tribute with Vice President Biden coming to town is going to be a lot of work for us believe it or not,” Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans said.

The city has changed forever but is still standing strong.

“We are coming up to a week, six days of events that we have been looking forward to for a year. We have a range of them that will take place beginning this Tuesday with the tribute event at the Hynes Convention Center up near the Boston Marathon Finish Line,” Grilk said.

Street closures will be in effect for several events around Boylston Street in the coming week, beginning with the tribute Tuesday afternoon.
