Officials: 5 Southbridge fires caused by arsonist

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) - Police are looking for an arsonist they believe started five fires in Southbridge Saturday night.

Officials say that the five fires were set within a five-hour span and have stepped up patrols around town.

The fires damaged homes on Cohasse St., Oakridge and Everett St.

"We want the public to be aware of these fires and to protect themselves by making sure the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes are working. Neighbors should keep an eye on each other's property and report any suspicious activity," said Chief DiFronzo.

Jose Rivera, who lives across the street from a triple-decker that got hit Saturday, took a video of the 4-alarm fire.

"We were shocked. We couldn't believe how big the fire was," Rivera said.

The other fires were smaller and didn't spread as quickly as the 4-alarm, which started on the back porch of a home that was vacant at the time.

No other injuries have been reported.

Anyone with information about the fires should call the Southbridge Police Department at (508) 764-5420 or the statewide Arson Hotline at (800) 682-9229.
