NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -
Police in New Bedford are investigating what lead up the remains of a baby being found in the middle of the road.
According to officials the remains were found around 6:30 Friday night in the area of County Street and Adams Street.
"The investigation into this unattended death remains in its early stages at this juncture in time. A representative from the State Medical Examiner's Office is currently en route to New Bedford to take custody of the baby and will perform an autopsy this weekend," a release from the Bristol County District Attorney said.
The Massachusetts State Police and Bristol County District Attorney’s Office are also assisting in the investigation.
Invesigators say that she was a white girl weighing about six pounds.
Investigators are seeking the public's assistance in locating the mother of the infant, who could possibly be in need of medical attention.
