METHUEN, Mass. (WHDH) -
The search for a New Hampshire bank robber came to a crashing end along riverside drive in Methuen. Police say the man behind the wheel. Was the same man behind a robbery of a Manchester bank Wednesday.
Investigators say they traced the suspect's cellphone to this parking lot in Lawrence. But when Lawrence police tried to grab the suspect, he took off.
"We tried to box him in, we were safe. Made sure there were no civilians in the area, but he evaded the boxing and then we proceeded on a short pursuit,” Lawrence Police Chief James Fitzpatrick said.
That chase reached out of Lawrence into Methuen, along Riverside Drive where the suspect lost control and crashed.
"Obviously speed was a factor. I believe he saw a Methuen cruiser then at that point panicked, lost control of the vehicle, sideswiped one vehicle apparently went out of control, hit another vehicle and then into the tree,” Methuen Police Captain Randy Haggar said.
Witnesses say a flying tire from one of the cars just missed a woman walking by. Police say the drivers of the cars the suspect hit escaped serious injury too.
Police say the suspect, 42-year-old Andrew Dufresne suffered serious but not life threatening injuries in the crash. And he's now facing serious charges including armed bank robbery, driving a stolen car and possession of a weapon.
Investigators say they found a rifle in his wreck.
Dufresne is still in the hospital but he will be charged in Massachusetts and likely extradited to New Hampshire where he will face more charges.
