LAWRENCE, Mass. (WHDH) -
The Rollins Elementary School in Lawrence was put on temporary lockdown Friday afternoon after an man approached the school with a gun.
Police say the incident started when they went to a home after the report of a break in. Once inside they found a man packaging drugs. The alleged drug dealer sent his pit bull after police who had to shoot and kill the animal.
“With the close proximity and the close quarters it was a pretty dangerous situation to have this particular type of animal,” Lawrence Police Chief James Fitzpatrick said.
The alleged drug dealer’s brother arrived and became angry when he found out his dog had been shot.
Police say the brother then grabbed a gun and headed towards the Rollins School where he was stopped by teachers.
“Just by engaging him, calming him down, and they just at one point they said can we talk to you outside, and he stepped outside and they closed the door,” Fitzpatrick said.
The suspect has been arrested but it is unclear what charges he will face.
