Car owner forced to pay up after blocking hydrant

Posted: Updated:
EAST BOSTON (WHDH) - Crews responding to the scene of an 8-alarm fire in East Boston had to force their way through a car to get to a nearby fire hydrant.

The car was illegally parked and left officers only one choice, break the windows and run the hose through the car.

Video shows firefighters bouncing the car so they would have enough clearance to even connect the hose.

A man who said his brother owned the car said the owner had parked there to check on friends who lived nearby.

“He’s my brother. He feels bad about the whole situation. I also feel bad. Anyone could have gotten hurt,” Rodrigo Mijangos said.

Neighbors say firefighters did the right thing by breaking through the car in order to prevent the fire from spreading and risking more lives.

The owner of the car will have to pay a $100 ticket in addition to the cost of repairing his vehicle.
