Man wandered in to Mayor Walsh's yard in front of police detail

DORCHESTER, Mass. (WHDH) - A man was arrested last week behind Mayor Marty Walsh's house after he wandered into the yard in front of a police officer.

Samuel Decosta, 37, was spotted at around 2:20 a.m. wandering up the driveway in Dorchester. The officer, who was working a detail, found the man suspicious and followed him.

He found Decosta trying to hide behind a small potted plant. Decosta told officers that he was being followed and was looking for a 24 hour store.

When police searched Decosta's coat, they found it stuffed with stolen electronics and he was arrested.

"Not a very bright criminal to walk up the driveway next to my house between myself and my neighbor," Walsh said. "This person is not going to have a long career in crime."

"He should be on one of the stupid criminal shows. You know, there is a car right in front of the mayor's house," said neighbor Jerry Hurley.

Decosta was arraigned and ordered held on bail. Police say that he has a lengthy record of breaking and entering. He was also already on probation.
