Rockland man fights town over giant holiday yard display

Posted: Updated:
ROCKLAND, Mass. (WHDH) - It's been months since Christmas, but a giant holiday display in Rockland is causing a feud between neighbors and between a man and the town.

Neighbors are worried that there is a zoning issue and that the man is selling the decorations from his home. It is illegal to run a business out of a residential neighborhood.

David Balch said that this is not a business and that it's just a case of neighbors getting angry over the displays, which he keeps up as a lover of the holidays.

He says he will leave up the display "until the issue is resolved to my satisfaction, until I have my day in court. I want it dropped. I'm not running a business. That’s the bottom line."

Balch has received a few cease and desist orders, but the cases were dropped. He said he recently received a $600 fine from the town even though he was never found guilty in court.

He added that he has sold maybe five snowmen.
