8-alarm East Boston fire started in parked car

Posted: Updated:

Boston firefighters spent several hours battling a massive fire in East Boston Wednesday night.

Officials say the fire started in the engine of a car in the driveway before spreading to the house at 85 Lexington St. and neighboring houses.

Witnesses say they heard two explosions coming from the car then seeing the fire intensify.

“The flames were the first thing you saw and then the firefighters were immediately here but you could see them all the way to the third floor at the top of the house. The car definitely blew up, you heard two loud booms,” one witness said.

"All I see is black smoke everywhere," another witness said.

Several engines and trucks responded quickly to the burning buildings, at one point the fire reached 8-alarms.

The fire raced up through the house, blew out the roof, and spread to the two homes on both sides. Some feared the whole neighborhood was burn.

“That's the major problem because they're only two feet apart. Once one house goes, everybody's scared of that factor,” Sean Fleming, who lives in the area, said.

Fire crews had several streets blocked off as crews worked to contain the flames and prevent it from spreading any further.

Wind gusts reached speeds of 30 mph, which made for a tough time battling the flames.

Another problem, a car was parked in front of a fire hydrant. Firefighters had to break through the windows to get a hose to the hydrant. The owner of the car got a ticket.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire without any serious injuries.

“The shifts, you know, worked. The firehouses are manned and when the alarm goes off, we respond,” Steve Macdonald of the Boston Fire Department said.

A total of 33 people were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross was at the scene to help those families.

The fire caused an estimated $750,000 worth of damage.
