Simmons College warns students of norovirus outbreak

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - School officials at Simmons College have notified students about a norovirus outbreak on campus, a story you saw first on 7News.

As many as 20 students were infected since the weekend. This outbreak comes just one week before final exams.

School officials report that the initial outbreak was due to students traveling off campus for an event.

The school sent emails about what they're doing to keep people healthy.

“They just told us that basically they're shutting down the self-serve stations in the dining halls, and they have hand sanitizer everywhere. They have specified bathrooms for people that are infected and they're upping the cleaning services in the bathrooms,” one student said.

Many of the students at Simmons are studying in the health care field, having their skills put to the test.

"We are all just being super aware of just staying clean, sanitizing our hands. I mean, as a nursing student, I'm kind of covered with that. I'm always kind of cautious," said Keenan Connery.

Officials have scrubbed down all bathrooms, and shut down the self-service sections at two dining locations on campus.

Officials also warned students against sharing food.

According to school officials, the virus has already peaked and the number of ill students has dropped.

This is the second outbreak at Simmons College in the past year. The first one came the week before December finals.

Norovirus can spread through food, drinks and even touching contaminated surfaces. It generally lasts for 24-48 hours.

Norovirus symptoms:

· Vomiting

· Nausea

· Diarrhea

· Fever

· Chills
