Winthrop coach talks about hockey drinking accusations

WINTHROP, Mass. (WHDH) - Winthrop High School hockey coach Dale Dunbar said he is happy to have his name cleared after his players were caught drinking in the locker room.

Dunbar spoke with 7News about how he is working to restore his good image in town.

"It was really tough to have my name linked to anything negative, because we always try to do things positively,” he said.

Dunbar was cleared by police in March, but he wasn’t reinstated by the school department until Tuesday.

“This is everything I'm not, to think that in some outlets that I was accused of procuring and participating in any type if wrong doing as far as underage drinking was unconscionable to me. I wouldn’t do that so that was hard,” Dunbar said.

The hockey players were found with alcohol in their locker room on Feb. 28, initially the coaches, who were in a nearby room, were implicated.

After an investigation however, police determined that Dunbar and the rest of the staff were not involved; they have now charged a 22-year-old in relation to the underage drinking.

“I love my town. I love the people, they have been very good to me. That's the tough part, the last thing I’d ever want to do is embarrass my town. This unfortunate situation was really tough to have my name linked to anything negative,” Dunbar said.

Dunbar, a former Bruins defenseman, has been coaching hockey for 25 years and runs a leadership program where he teaches kids the perils of peer pressure and drunk driving.

“Coaching is in my blood, I just love it so I kept going with it. You certainly don’t do it for any other reason except that you love kids and you want to develop them,” he said.

Dunbar said he’s mostly looking forward to returning to his regular life.

“I'm looking forward to get back to normalcy as far as my job, coaching and hopefully with the rink, I just want some normalcy back,” Dunbar said.
