Family says drunk driver may have intentionally hit woman

Posted: Updated:
WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) - Police are investigating whether a woman was intentionally run down by an accused drunk driver in Shrewsbury.

A woman was seriously injured in the crash and now police are looking into whether or not she was targeted.

The victim, Katrina McCarty, is still in critical condition and unconscious after several surgeries.

Police said McCarty, 38, was driving her SUV when she was involved in a crash. They believe the mother of three got out of her vehicle and was hit by a drunk driver who dragged her 150 yards. According to a police report the man said he was on a date "with a beautiful woman."

The driver was arrested and charged with operating under the influence. Family members say he was familiar with McCarty and was a regular at the bar where she worked.  McCarty's sister, Amy Strickland, said the man used to bring her gifts.

“This wasn’t an accident. It just came to me and I couldn’t sleep and I haven’t been able to sleep. There’s a connection in my mind,” Strickland said.

The family wants police to investigate this as an attempted murder and police have said they will leave no stone unturned.

The man that allegedly hit and dragged McCarty is being held on $50,000 bail.
