Hundreds gather for fallen Plymouth officer's vigil

Posted: Updated:
PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) - A community came together on Sunday to remember a Plymouth police officer killed in the line of duty.

Around 750 people packed into a local park for solidarity as the town prepares to lay Greg Maloney to rest. They had a moment of silence and led a prayer.

“The police department has been so appreciative of how the community has come together. Outpouring we have gotten has been incredible,” said Chief Michael Botieri.

Lt. Victor Higgins remembers the day 16 years ago Maloney joined the force. He still remembers the officer that stopped at every single corner during a family funeral procession.

“He was so impressive. I have got goosebumps just talking about what he did for my family at that critical time,” Higgins said.

The words "Plymouth Strong" were seen on some mourners' shirts.

A wake will be held Monday afternoon at Memorial Hall. It is open to the public, but there is a private viewing for the family from 2 to 3 p.m. The wake continues until 8 p.m. for the public.

Maloney was killed during a motorcycle accident last week. The cause of death is still under investigation.
