Fans prepare for the Red Sox home opener

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Sausages sizzling on the grill outside Fenway Park is a special kind of smell you only get on the day of the Sox home opener.

Vendors sold souvenirs and customers packed the pro shop with its stocked shelves.

Eager fans waited for the gates to Fenway to open and many camped out overnight, hoping to get tickets.

Fans also lined up to have their picture taken with Officer Steve Horgan of the Boston Police Department, who is holding onto the celebrity status he earned from the photo of his arms-up celebration last year.

“I love Opening Day, it’s one of my favorite days of the year, one of my favorite details to do,” Horgan said.

Another group from Myrtle Beach referred to themselves as “The Opening Day Posse,” and keeps strict rules for the day.

“If you call him by his name instead of ‘Godfather,’ you have to buy everyone a round of drinks,” one fan said.

Pre-game ceremonies begin at 1 p.m. Friday, with a presentation of World Series rings, a helicopter flyover, and a moment of silence. The game kicks off at 2:05 p.m.
