Outpouring of support for Michael Kennedy

Posted: Updated:
WEST ROXBURY, Mass. (WHDH) - For the second day in a row, there was a tremendous outpouring of firefighters from near and far participating in the sacred rituals of honoring a fallen brother.

The body of Michael Kennedy rolled slowly through a sea of blue.

“Very important, you know, for his family, to have them go through the grieving process. See that the firefighters care,” said William Walker, a Philadelphia firefighter.

Thousands of firefighters again surrounded the family of a fallen brother, coming from nearly every state in the country and beyond.

“What we do is a very dangerous job. It could happen to any one of us any given day,” said Mark Theroux, an Agawam firefighter.

Christine Celli brought her son to observe the procession and he dressed as a firefighter.

“We’re hoping to impart on him this is really a moment to honor somebody who did a really hard job and lost his life in the process,” she said.

The long column of bagpipers played for Kennedy, one of two firefighters who died in last week’s 9-alarm fire in Back Bay. A fellow firefighter carried Kennedy’s helmet in the somber procession. The Marine’s hymn played and some observers noted Kennedy’s service in the war in Iraq.

A South Carolina firefighter who said his department lost several firefighters a few years ago noted that thousands of firefighters descended upon his department in a show of support. He said he felt the love and respect and that he hoped the Kennedy and Walsh families felt that as well.
