Red Sox return to Fenway for home opener on Friday

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - The Boston Red Sox are getting ready to celebrate their third World Series title in a decade with opening ceremonies at a refurbished Fenway Park.

Workers have added a 40 foot long bar including additional concession stands. Tasty Burger, the now official burger of the Red Sox, will also be established inside the ballpark.

Pre-game ceremonies on Friday will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will include the presentation of the World Series rings.

"I don't know there will be as many surprises. I think that people will correctly anticipate that you may see banners unfurl and see the things delivered then see the brings get presented then you will see the players hoist the World Series flag. Then you will meet the Brewers and the 2014 Red Sox," said Dr. Charles Steinberg, Executive Vice President of the team.

There will also be a helicopter fly-over from the Coast Guard, the ceremonial first pitch and the call to "play ball." There will also be performances from the Dropkick Murphys and Keith Lockhart conducting the Boston Pops.

The Red Sox say the pregame ceremony will last about an hour and honor not just the current champions but also make note of the remarkable era in Boston sports history. The city's four major professional sports teams have won eight championships since 2002.

The team will also acknowledge the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and hold a moment of silence for the two firefighters who died in the Back Bay fire last week.

The gates open at 11:35 a.m. and Fenway officials encourage visitors to take the Green Line to Kenmore Station.

The Red Sox will play their home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
