WEST ROXBURY, Mass. (WHDH) -
Three of Firefighter Michael Kennedy's cousins went up to the podium at the West Roxbury funeral on Thursday, telling lighthearted stories of the fallen firefighter.
Davin Patrick Kennedy spoke with two men, Nick and Bobby, behind him as he remembered family trips and the firefighter's love of sports.
"Mike's nickname was dork growing up. For some reason, he was really proud of it. Most guys outgrew these names and things like that. Not Mike. He owned it," Kennedy said.
Kennedy's greatest memory of his cousin was the time the two went skydiving.
"We went skydiving. It was a thrill. And then afterwards we spent the whole day just mini golfing, drinking, having fun, playing giant Jenga when we got home. That's one of my favorite days that I can remember," he said.
Through the laughter, Kennedy took the time to acknowledge the response the family got from the city of Boston and the rest of the country.
"The entire country, both here and overseas, have reached out to tell us the various memorials and honors being awarded to Mike. We can only read that no matter how long I was to stand up and talk to all of you, I would never fully capture the larger than life character that he was," Kennedy said.
