Lt. Walsh's wedding ring recovered from ashes in time for funeral

WATERTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) -

When firefighters recovered Lt. Ed Walsh’s body as the tragic fire in Boston’s Back Bay died down last week they couldn’t find his wedding ring.

That changed Tuesday as Kristen Walsh was mourning her husband’s death at his wake Tuesday night.

Leaders of the firefighter’s union said they would do anything to help Kristen and finding this ring was her only request.

Tuesday firefighters were able to enter the burned out building and begin searching through the ashes for the ring for the first time.

"Part of their procedures is they sift through burnt material and during the course of that one of the investigators found the ring,” Boston Fire Department official Steve MacDonald said.

They found the ring in the debris in the basement where Lt. Walsh’s body was recovered and rushed to St. Patrick’s Parish in the middle of the wake to give Kristen a ray of hope amid so much sadness.

“It made them all pretty happy...It was such a sad event they were going to be able to present the ring,” MacDonald said.
