Boston Firefighters Local 718 president speaks about Lt. Ed Walsh

Posted: Updated:
WATERTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) - Family, friends, and colleagues gathered at the funeral of Lt. Edward Walsh on Wednesday to pay respects to the fallen firefighter and to listen to words about his service and his life.

Richard Paris, the president of the Boston Firefighters Local 718 acknowledged the struggle in finding words to make sense of the 9-alarm fire in Back Bay last week that took Walsh's life along with firefighter Michael Kennedy.

"Sometimes it's difficult to convey the dangers the firefighters face, the bonds that we share, to those who are not in our business," Paris said. "However, as I look around the church today, I realize that Eddie Walsh was surrounded by two families who knew all too well what it means to be a firefighter."

Paris said Walsh spoke often of his wife, Kristen, and his children, Dylan, Morgan, and Griffin, and added that the Boylston Street fire station was Walsh's second home.

"The city of Boston was lucky to have him and he will be missed," Paris said. "He was a born leader who did not regard himself as a hero. We will never forget Eddie Walsh, no matter what. But, just as importantly, we will never forget the Walsh family."
