Plymouth officer killed in line-of-duty motorcycle crash

Posted: Updated:

A Plymouth police officer was killed Tuesday after a motorcycle crash on Samoset Road.

Greg Maloney, 43, was taken to Mass. General Hospital for medical treatment where he later died.

“Great family man, two teenage boys... That's all I can say at this point,” Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri said.

Plymouth's police chief was over-come with emotion. He said Maloney joined the force 17 years ago and joined the motorcycle unit the day it was formed in 2009.

Police are still not sure why Maloney’s motorcycle crashed Tuesday afternoon. At the time he was riding with another officer.

“It doesn't appear according to them that the bikes touched each other, no obvious reason for the bike to go down,” Chief Michael Botieri said.

People who live near the accident scene said even after Maloney fell his bike kept going for about a quarter mile.

“His motorcycle is all the way up by our house and Mark Drive you can see is down by the blinking light. His bike traveled all the way up there,” Lisa Mohn, who lives near crash site, said.

Maloney was flown to Boston, but died at the hospital. Several officers, including Plymouth's police chief, gathered outside Mass General mourning their loss.

“It doesn't get worse than this for us,” Chief Michael Botieri said.

"Our hearts are broken for the police. It's been a rough couple of weeks for first responders around here. These people put their lives on the line every day, you hate to hear tragedies of this sort," Derek Mohn said.

The scene was closed for several hours while officers investigated the accident. The officer's motorcycle came to rest 500 feet from where the crash occurred.

The Plymouth Police Department hopes to learn more about the cause of this accident from the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
