Newton carjacking victim speaks about confrontation

NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) -

A 75-year-old woman said her heart stopped Monday afternoon when her car was stolen by a man with a gun.

Antoinette Stewart said she was at home when she heard a knock on the door. A man told her he had just sideswiped her car and he wanted to look at the damage with her.

When they got to the car Stewart realized it wasn’t what it looked like.

"All of the sudden he started opening the car up and I said ‘what are you doing?’ He got in and sat in the driver’s seat, lifted his shirt up and I saw a gun. He said ‘Don’t give me any trouble,’” Stewart said.

She didn’t give him any trouble and he left in her car, driving through Newton where he got in a crash. Eventually he was arrested in Bedford.

Stewart said she feels lucky she only lost her car and maybe some jewelry.

Police believe the suspect and possibly a second man were in her son’s apartment for several hours changing clothes, stealing his property and drinking beers.

"They had gone through the jewelry and changed clothes. They were drinking beer, they must have been up there for a while,” she said.

Stewart said that while her car might have some bumps and possibly a bullet hole from when an officer shot toward the vehicle it could have been much worse.
