Victorino on disabled list, Lester ready to take the mound

Posted: Updated:

Outfielder Shane Victorino was put on the 15-day disabled list. He will not be in the lineup for Monday’s afternoon opener.

7’s Joe Amorosino said the weather is perfect at Camden Yards for the Red Sox season opener against the Baltimore Orioles.

Last year, the Red Sox overcame the odds and a whole lot of adversity to win it all. This year, they get their first bump in the road right on opening day.

Shane Victorino was actually injured during their final spring training game. He went back to Boston for the MRI Sunday, but couldn't get the green light for opening day.

Jackie Bradley Jr. gets the call-up. He is on the opening-day roster for the second year in a row. Mike Carp will start the day in right field for Victorino.

The outlook is sunny for the Red Sox, who have won four of the last six season openers. John Farrell and company coming off that remarkable 28-win turnaround that ended with a World Series title. Now they will try to become the first team to repeat as champions since the Yankees won from 1998 to 2000. As for this afternoon, it is just game one of 162.

But there is always something special, nothing quite like opening day.

“There is a special atmosphere that comes along with that. And you can close the book on spring training. Which in the eyes of many, is a good thing. It's the beginning of a new journey,” Red Sox Manager John Farrell said.

“I can't wait. You know, happy to be part of it. Happy to be with the guys again from the start,” Xander Bogaerts said, who will play his first major league opening day.

“I love that feeling. The first time you do it, you’re just trying not to screw up. I’ve been fortunate enough to do it a couple times after,” Jon Lester said about opening day.

Lester will be on the mound Monday afternoon going against the Orioles.

“I like that feeling. Knowing these guys are counting on me to get us off on the right foot,” he said.
