Rapper speaks out about shooting during mother's funeral

WEYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) - Rapper and reality TV star Benzino spoke from his hospital bed on Sunday about getting shot during his mother’s funeral procession.

Benzino, real name Raymond Scott, is recovering at South Shore Hospital after allegedly getting shot multiple times by his nephew, 36-year-old Gai Scott from Randolph.

Scott said that the shooting stemmed from a family feud over money and care for his mother.

“I didn't know if it was my mother because I didn't recognize the people so I sped up to the front, and that's when the gun shots went, boom boom boom,” said Scott, who was driving next to the funeral procession down Route 3 near Duxbury.

He said that he got out of the car after realizing he wasn’t critically injured.

“I maneuvered the car, jumped out the car and hoped to god that somebody would get me to the hospital.”

His aunt found him on the side of the road. Scott was taken to the Duxbury Police Department, where he reported the incident.

Scott says that it’s not about his charged nephew, but rather about his recovery and his mother’s memory.

“It’s not about him. What I want it to be about is that my mother was a beautiful person and what happened had no reflect on her and what she was about," he said.

Scott says that he hopes to get out of the hospital on Monday and visit his mother’s grave.

"You got family, and you got relatives. As far as what happened to my mom, those people to me now, relatives. Family is what's in here," Scott said, moving his hand from around the room to his chest.

Gai Scott was arraigned in Plymouth County Court, facing numerous charges, including assault with intent to murder. He plead not guilty and is being held without bail. He will appear in court Wednesday for a dangerousness hearing.

Gai Scott's attorney called this a case of self defense.
