Michael Kennedy's mother speaks out about son after fire

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Michael Kennedy didn’t always want to be a firefighter. He first wanted to be a garbage man. Then a chef, and then finally a marine.

Kathy Crosby-Bell and her family live with the pictures and the memories of all the experiences her son Michael Kennedy packed into his 33 years as a combat marine, a big brother, a fitness coach and a firefighter.

Mike Kennedy lived like someone who knew every day is a gift and tomorrow is not to be taken for granted.
"He was always moving. He was not a guy who could sit still," Crosby-Bell said.

For the fallen firefighter’s funeral, the mom chose a quote from Winston Churchill that she says fits perfectly: “'I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.”

The day of the Back Bay fire Kennedy’s mom got a call from her sister asking whether she knew if Mike was okay.

“I turned on the television and it was just as it happened it was Michael at the time coming out of the building with the other fire fighters. And I just knew. I don't know how I knew. I just knew.”

Kennedy's proud family refuses to live with what ifs. Instead, they remember the legacy their young hero left behind.
“He could have been killed in Iraq but he died here in Boston being a hero. He died for a cause, for a reason. And I’m very proud of him and I know that given the choice, that's what he would want.
