Fundraiser held in Sean Collier's memory

EAST BOSTON (WHDH) - Friends and family of fallen MIT officer Sean Collier came together Saturday for the "Collier Strong" event, raising money in his honor.

Collier was killed in the line of duty allegedly by the Boston Marathon bombing suspect last year, and the scholarship fund will work to send recruits to the Lowell Police Academy.

"It means a lot to me personally as well as the other guys that were there the night Sean got shot. We have to do something to keep his name alive. it's just a tragedy Sean's not with us," said Sgt. Richard Sullivan of the MIT Police Department.

The event, which was held at Forum Restaurant, brought people together to remember the officer and keep his name alive.

"It's a really good opportunity to remember Sean. The one year is obviously very emotional, and this is a good chance to come together and do something really positive in Sean's honor," said friend Sara Ferry, who is among a team who will run in this year's Boston Marathon in Collier's honor.

Collier's sister Jen Rogers says she appreciates all the support Boston has shown her and her family over the past year.

"At the end of the day, he went out of his way to be nice to people and take care of them and take care of the city of Cambridge, MIT, our city, Somerville. I mean he kind of worked everywhere, he was so proud of what he did," said Rogers.

Collier was posthumously sworn in as a member of the Somerville Police Department last year and his name will be added to the wall at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington in May.
