Jerry Remy speaks about son's past, returning to baseball

Posted: Updated:

Red Sox broadcasting legend Jerry Remy spoke with WEEI Friday about the difficult decisions he's made to help his son get out of trouble.

Jared Remy is locked up facing murder charges, now his dad is speaking out about the past, and the future.

“We thought we were loving parents and we failed, we failed plain and simple,” Remy said.

During the interview Jerry Remy said he never felt threatened by Jared but he and his wife worried.

“We always felt that it was a disaster waiting to happen something around the corner and that's why we always tried to get him as much help as you possibly can,” Remy said.

Jared Remy had a criminal history; he was charged and convicted of several violent crimes before Jennifer Martel's murder.

Jerry Remy said he tried to help his son.

“Did we enable him? Yes, we paid for lawyers, we paid for psych, we paid for the help we thought he needed,” Remy said.

Remy said he needs to move forward; he defended his decision to return to the booth this season.

“It's a job that I love and I love it as much as 26 years ago when I started it. I feel like I have a right to make a living and do my job,” he said.

The Red Sox have said they support Remy’s decision to return to broadcasting.
