Fire alarm operator doing OK after tragic Back Bay fire

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) -

The tragic Back Bay fire is having a deep impact on the tight-knit community of emergency responders; especially the fire alarm operator who took the mayday call from those fallen firefighters.

Friends say it has been a tough 48 hours for her, but that she did very well under the intense pressure.

“She’s taking it tough, but she's OK; that's what we do. She did a fantastic job. It's a difficult time, but you do what you have to,” Dave McLelland said.

McLelland was listening on the radio as the mayday was called in.

“It’s very chilling and I heard it as it was happening. I knew in my mind that I was hearing the last words,” he said.

McLelland served as a Boston EMT for 32 years, his father was a late fire lieutenant in Newton and he said he knows the support outside Engine 33 helps.
