Memorial outside Engine Company 33 grows for fallen firefighters

BOSTON (WHDH) - Two firefighters from Engine Company 33, Ladder 15 on Boylston Street lost their lives Wednesday battling a 9-alarm fire in the Back Bay and now a memorial is growing outside the station for the men.

“We're all here for them. They're Boston's finest, so any little gesture helps,” a community member said.

The flag was lowered to half-staff in honor of Lt. Ed Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy. Colleagues hung black bunting outside the station.

Gov. Deval Patrick visited the station on Thursday to give his condolences.

"My prayers and thoughts go out to the families of those who were lost, the Walsh and Kennedy families. To the colleagues who have survived and carry on, my admiration and my thanks," Patrick said.

Patrick spoke privately with members of Engine 33.

"They're hurt, they told funny stories, they do things that families do when they're trying to cope with a tragedy," Patrick said.

Cardinal Sean O'Malley and Patriots owner Robert Kraft also visited Engine 33 to pay their respects.

"The whole community is very much moved by what has happened. It underscores how the vocations of these men is to put their lives at risk to make us safe. And we all feel very, very grateful. Very saddened by what has happened," O'Malley said.

Many in the neighborhood consider them friends and stopped by the fire station to pay their respects. Some bowed their heads, some prayed, and some left flowers.

“We're close knit down here and we see these guys in our businesses and around town. Our hearts go out to them and we thank them for everything they do,” Annie Chandler said.

Many students also live in the area and wanted to thank the firefighters for their ultimate sacrifice.

“Coming out of the dorms, seeing all the smoke hearing that the firefighters lost their lives is really sad. I’m very thankful for them,” Allie Gemellaro said.

The memorial is still growing outside the station and many people are saying the men aren’t just heroes, they’re neighbors and part of the community.
