Two firefighters killed battling 9-alarm fire in Back Bay

BOSTON (WHDH) - Sources tell 7News two firefighters were killed battling a 9-alarm fire that broke out in the Back Bay Wednesday afternoon.

According to Boston Fire, the building at 298 Beacon St. is a 4-story brick brownstone. The fire started in the basement and officials responded at around 2:43 p.m.

The District Attorney's office said in an email that the fire is being treated as a crime scene.

According to sources, in total there have been 18 transported to area hospitals, all members of the fire or police departments.

Beth Israel Hospital confirmed it took in seven patients: six are in good condition and one is in fair condition.

Officials believe that all residents have been evacuated.

Mayor Marty Walsh and Police Commissioner Evans have arrived on the scene.

Boston Public Schools are saying to expect school bus delays near Back Bay and downtown due to the fire. For bus updates, people are asked to call 617-635-9520 or visit the school bus website.

The fire is impacting traffic. Storrow Drive eastbound will be closed at Kenmore Square. Westbound is expected to close. State Police are encouraging commuters to seek alternative routes. Beacon St. is closed from Arlington St. to Mass. Ave.
