Planning, teamwork keys to marathon bombing response

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Nearly one year after the Boston Marathon bombing city and state leaders gathered to talk about how careful planning allowed the city to work through tragedy and come out a stronger community.

Former Mayor Tom Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick were among the speakers at ‘Leading Cities through Crisis: Lessons Learned from the Marathon Bombing.’

Gov. Patrick said he was on his way home from the statehouse when his daughter called him to tell him what happened. He said the city has plans in place to help work through tragedies.

"We executed brilliantly on an emergency triage plan we had put in place years before and practiced so that none of the hospitals were overwhelmed and everyone was sent to the right place for the right care. The medical professionals made the world’s best car better and lost not one patient who made it to hospital,” he said.

Former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis talked about why he made the decision to release pictures of the suspects.

“I wanted it out to protect my officers. More important than the officers I wanted out to protect the community. People had a right to defend themselves against these two suspects,” Davis said.

Menino told reporters that the city is a better place because of how everyone came together after the bombing.

“What I learned was the spirit of cooperation and how everyone worked together. Boston is a stronger city because of what happened, people really rallied to each other

Menino also said he noticed how much good can be done by working with the One Fund. More than $61 million was raised from people around the world and distributed to victims in a short amount of time.
