T riders make changes in commute

Posted: Updated:

Monday morning's commute had many T riders finding a different route to work.

The Government Center Station is now closed for two years.

And for some people who work in the heart of the city, and used this stop daily, that's two years too long.

“That is going to be a huge inconvenience, oh my god,” one T rider said.

“It will cause a lot of problems because this mode of transportation is close to us, it's easy,” another T rider said.

The MBTA said it has to be done. The T stop will undergo a major renovation. Officials said it will become a fully accessible, safer, modern, and more comfortable facility.

Drawings show what the station will look like, including a glass-lined entrance. The plans call for a new primary entrance, a renovated lobby, and new platforms, among other things.

Riders, though, split over whether it needs such an elaborate makeover.

“Oh it definitely could be updated, without question,” a T rider said.

“It looks like a T station, I don't really think it's supposed to look really beautiful, I guess,” another T rider said.

The green and blue lines will still pass through the station, but they won't be stopping.

“I guess I'll have to find a new station,”a T-rider said.

The MBTA said riders can get off at other stops like Park Street, Haymarket, or Bowdoin.
