Attleboro family rescues deer caught in fence

Posted: Updated:

A family in Attleboro got a surprise in their backyard Sunday morning when they saw a deer up close.

It started Sunday morning when Dixie the dog was barking in the back yard. 7-year-old Grant Kelley was the first to see it.

"We looked outside and we thought it was two huge branches but then we looked on the other side and we saw a huge head," Grant said.

What looked like two branches turned out to be the legs of a deer, stuck in the Kelleys' back yard fence in Attleboro.

"Probably just jumped over here and got caught didn't make it all the way over there,” Grant said.

Luckily, Grant’s father Brian Kelley was just coming home from working the overnight shift.

Grant showed his dad the deer, and Brian immediately tried to free the deer.

"I started to pet the back of the deer to calm him down cause he was kicking," Brian said.

Then he started the careful process of freeing the animal.

"I started to gently free the bottom legs first, release the pickets and then was able to move the deer gently off the top of the fence," Brian said.

Grant’s mother, Kate Kelley, captured her husband's rescue mission on video.

"We are all animal lovers in this family so we were very thrilled to see it ended well…We were very fortunate and so we named it lucky,” Kate said.

The deer ran off into the woods unharmed.
