David Ortiz agrees to 1-year contract extension with Sox

Posted: Updated:
UNDATED (WHDH) - David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox have agreed on a 1-year, $16 million contract extension for the 2015 season.

The deal also includes an option for 2016.

Ortiz has been dropping hints all winter that he wanted a new deal with the team, making a statement back in February at the start of spring training.

Red Sox owner John Henry said he wanted to fulfill the player's desires to retire as a member of the team.

"With this agreement, we have near certainty that David Ortiz will finish his career in a Red Sox uniform," Henry said. "It is difficult to describe David’s contributions to our city both on the field and off the field."

The 38-year-old is coming off a 2013 season that saw him hit .309 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs. He’ll be turning 39 in November.

Now all Big Papi has to do is prepare for the 2014 season.
