Two men rescued from under ice in Foxborough

Posted: Updated:

Two men fell through thin ice in the Neponset Reservoir in Foxborough. Rescuers said the men were trying to go ice fishing.

“Which is absolutely ridiculous, wrong time of the year to be doing it,” said Charlie Elliot who lives nearby.

Elliot didn't see the men fall in, but he did see a woman trying to help them.

“I saw someone go into the woods to find a long stick in order to help them get out of the water,” Elliot said.

That woman ended up also falling through the thin ice. She was able to get herself out as help arrived.

The men, one in his 40s and one in his 60s, never even got their fishing gear out there with them. The fall happened almost as soon as they stepped out.

“Both of them were about 100 yards off shore and they were hanging on to the ice with their arms,” Thomas Buckley of the Foxborough Fire Department said.

Firefighters used a special sled and quickly got them out. They were rushed to the hospital. One was taken by a medical helicopter to Boston due to fears that he had hypothermia.

Firefighters said that this time of year you should just stay off the ice.

“It's been warm lately and the ice, some parts are still kind of thick but most of it is thin. I don't know what they were doing out there on the ice,” Buckley said.

Firefighters said both men are expected to be okay.
