BOSTON (WHDH) - A man died Friday morning after falling down an elevator shaft on St. James Ave.

First responders arrived at 31 St. James Ave. in Park Square at around 10:07 a.m. and found the man unresponsive.

Boston firefighters had to lock out the elevator in the shaft as other officials entered the pit.

According to police, the victim was in a freight elevator that was stuck between the first floor and the basement. He had attempted to jump from the first floor to the basement, but missed, landing 30 feet below in the sub-basement.

The victim is believed to be an older male, but he has not been identified.

Police are still investigating.
