High school senior killed in Waltham shooting

Posted: Updated:
WALTHAM, Mass. (WHDH) - Police responded to a shooting at a Waltham apartment complex late Thursday night, where a Waltham High School student was found suffering from a gunshot wound.

Local and state police were called to Garden Crest Apartments around 10:30 p.m. and detectives combed the area for hours. Part of the grounds were cornered off with police tape as detectives focused their attention in a parking lot. Hours later police cleared the scene.

The victim was identified by the Middlesex District Attorney's office as 17-year-old Tyler Zanco of Waltham. He was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A Waltham police officer was called to the victim's house where grieving relatives are in seclusion.

Police were also at Waltham High School, where Zanco was the captain of the wrestling team. Grief counselors will be available to talk with students Saturday.

MCAS exams were canceled on Friday and rescheduled for sometime next week.

"It was sad seeing everyone so emotional and it was hard to be in class," said student Melanie Hernandez.

It is the second shooting at the apartment complex in the past four months and neighbors are anxious.

"Three or four months back, one more incident was there in the Middlesex Road, so it's really scary for us," said neighbor Archisha Wachasunder.

Police and the District Attorney's office are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made, but officials don't think that this was a random attack.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Waltham Police at (781) 314-3607 or Massachusetts State Police Detectives at (781) 897-6600.
