Black bear sighted near Westford schools

WESTFORD, Mass. (WHDH) - Reports of a black bear near schools in Westford on Wednesday sparked concern from officials and kept students indoors.

The bear was spotted near the Crisafulli and Robinson schools at around 10:55 a.m.

Police said that the bear spotted has been roaming around town for about a month. Residents say they've seen the familiar sight a few times over the years.

Sabu Mizanur had what believes is the same bear in his backyard and snapped photographs.

Recesses at Westford Public Schools were held indoors as a precaution.

"As always we proceed with caution when a potentially dangerous animal, such as a bear, is reported. But bear attacks in New England are all but unheard of," a spokesperson from the school district told 7News.

The town's animal control officer said that the bear isn't looking for trouble. He's just hungry.

"Right now I think its just one particular bear, a male I believe. He's out a little early, not too bad, it's been warm," she said.

Officials are telling residents to make noise--such as using an air horn--to keep the animal at bay. It's also a good idea to bring in bird feeders and trash cans.

If anybody has any information about the bear, they are asked to contact Westford Animal Control at (978) 697-4574.
