Former officer arrested after hit and run on Mass. Ave

BOSTON (WHDH) -

A former police officer has been arrested in the hit and run that left another man with life-threatening injuries in Roxbury early Wednesday.

According to police, the victim was crossing the street in front of the Orange Line T station on Mass. Ave at around 6:00 a.m. when he was hit by a vehicle that kept on going.

Lawrence Stead, 69, of Quincy was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident causing personal injury.

Stead served on the force of the Cambridge Police for 35 years before retiring in June 2009.

The victim in this accident is man in his late 50s or early 60s. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center. He remains in critical condition.

Boston Police said they located the gray Mercury Marquee believed to be involved in the incident in Quincy. A witness got a good description of the vehicle and the license plate. Police found the car matching the description.

A witness who saw the accident watched the suspect’s car drive two blocks and stop. The witness said the driver got out, looked up the block and quickly got back in the car and drove off.

Stead will be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Thursday.
