Westford Police Sgt. pulls man from behind rolling truck

Posted: Updated:
WESTFORD, Mass. (WHDH) - A local police sergeant is being called a hero after he pulled a man out of the way of a moving recycling truck.

The driver of that truck had crashed into a utility pole, that’s when he got out to lie on the ground while help was on the way.

Sgt. Marc Proia was the first to arrive, he said everything seemed normal when he assessed the scene.

“I certainly didn’t expect the truck which was parked and stopped when I got there, and as soon as I got there it started to roll,” Proia said.

It all happened on Robinson Road. Judy Akers was a witness who called 911 after the crash.

“It was scary, he would have been crushed to death right in front of me,” she said.

Proia was able to pull the driver to safety, but as the truck rolled it crashed into the front of a police cruiser.

After 17 years on the force, he said this was just another day on the job, although it was his first experience with something like this.

“I’ve never been actually hands on as far as a truck that could potentially roll over somebody,” Proia said.

The driver of that recycling truck will spend the night in the hospital and State Police have cited the company that owns the truck for operating a truck with bad brakes.
