Menino says cancer won't slow him down

BOSTON (WHDH) -

Former Mayor Tom Menino revealed he's been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer but he's not letting it slow him down.

Back to work this morning for Menino. He said he does not want anyone's pity and you can expect to see him going full steam ahead, including his work at Boston University. He doesn't plan to slow down despite his battle against cancer.

Menino received a standing ovation at his first public appearance after news that he has cancer.

“I believe in myself, I believe in my doctors, I believe in my faith and I believe I have the ability to beat it back,” Menino said.

The 71-year-old said his doctor found the cancer by accident three weeks ago after checking him for chronic leg pain. Menino said doctors told him it's advanced and spreading to his liver and lymph nodes. Still Menino said the battle is just a bump.

”I've beat other things back and I’ll beat this one. I'm a fighter,” Menino said.

Support is pouring in from all across the city. Menino said he's keeping to his schedule. He appeared at the Dorchester farmer's market to support a local author who wrote a children’s book about him called 'Good-Bye Mr. Mayor'.

“He's a strong man. We hope he does great. He'll recover,” said a man at the farmer’s market.

“It's a shocking development few expected but Menino said don't expect him to slow down.

“You just can't give up. You just work at it and go forward. That's what I'm going to do. I'll be in my office Monday morning at 9:00,” Menino said.

Menino said he's already had one chemotherapy treatment and has another one this Thursday and four more scheduled for one every two weeks.
