ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (WHDH) - A Colorado mother is behind bars after a big lie about her son made her about $25,000 in donations.

Sandy Nguyen allegedly paid for a trip to Disneyland for her family with donations from friends and family who believed her six-year-old had cancer.

Tim Sullivan is a neighbor who used to visit the family's home and recently saw the boy with a shaved head. However, he and other neighbors say Nguyen never asked them for money.

"If my son--I'd be going to my neighbors if they could help me, and if they did that, I’d reach into my wallet to help them,” Sullivan said.

At an elementary school, students donated quarters and paid extra to wear a hat to school. Teachers paid to wear jeans and a 5K race was held for the boy.

Stylists at the salon where Nguyen works said they’ve just found out about her arrest and many already donated money.

More charges may be filed pending a further investigation.
