JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WHDH) -
A Florida mother posted a bold ad on Craigslist that said she was willing to sell her kidney for $10,000.
"I'm at the wits-end, basically. I'm willing to do anything and this was one of the choices I made," said Jill Harris, who lost her job as a mortgage broker in 2006 and money is tight. She hasn't been able to get another job and she has a son who is almost eight years old.
She said in desperation, she researched selling body parts and decided.
"The only reason I'm using it would be for rent and electric," Harris said.
Amy Reese is with Lifequest Organ Recovery Services, the federally designated organ donor program for north Florida and she said more than 4,000 people in the state are awaiting a kidney.
"Organ donation is truly one of the greatest acts of human compassion and it is a donation," Reese said.
Organdonor.gov says it is illegal to sell human organs and tissues in the U.S. and violators are subject to fines and imprisonment.
Harris has since said she will be removing the ad.
