Former mayor Menino diagnosed with advanced form of cancer

BOSTON (WHDH) - Former Boston mayor Thomas Menino has been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer, but isn't letting it get him down.

"I look forward to a healthy life afterwards. I'm very confident I'll be back." Menino said.

The 71-year-old walked into the Dorchester's Farmers' Market on Sunday, promising to fight hard against the illness.

"I'll be here. I'm not leaving," Menino said.

7News confirmed on Saturday that Menino is seeking treatment for the cancer, which has spread to his liver and lymph nodes. Doctors first discovered the cancer three weeks ago.

In an interview with the Boston Globe, Menino said that he will get through this and that he doesn't want sympathy.

"It's very simple. I was diagnosed. I've got treatment coming. I believe I'll get through it. And I'll be at work Monday morning," Menino said.

Former mayoral spokesperson Dot Joyce said that Menino will still be doing events all week and will continue "being the mayor we all him to be."

At the end of 2012, he suffered a series of ailments including a broken vertebrae and being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Menino has battled cancer before, having undergone several rounds of chemotherapy. He had cancer removed from between his shoulder blades and a growth removed from his face.

"My attitude really is, we'll get through it. We got through the [illnesses in 2012], we'll get through this. I have great doctors and supportive friends...I'll be OK. I have to be. I want to watch my grandkids grow up," Menino said.

This is the first time in 20 years that Menino didn't preside over the St. Patrick's Day parade, but the current mayor has hope for his treatment.

"Tom Menino has a lot still to give to the city. I look forward to taking some of that knowledge from him and putting it here," Mayor Walsh said on Sunday.
