Leukemia in remission,12-year-old is back on the court

BILLERICA, Mass. (WHDH) - For 12-year-old Shannon Curley the sound of the buzzer when she scores a basket means more than two points; it means life is getting back to normal.

Shannon has been battling leukemia for the past two years so her game-winning shot was a momentous occasion.

“I can't help that I got sick, so it’s nice that people know ‘Yeah, she's a normal kid. She can still do things she likes to do,’” Shannon said.

The middle school student has been dreaming of getting back on the court and taking free throws while she underwent chemo and radiation.

“I like the feeling of getting a shot in. That’s one of the best feelings and hearing the crowd cheer, I love that,” She said.

Since her diagnosis on Christmas 2012 the team has been draped in her orange, her favorite color, and there has been a spot for her on the roster.

“She has been on our team even though she hasn't been here physically for two years. We put her number in the book for every game, we do a cheer for her before every game,” Ed Tolan said.

Now that she is finally ready her team has rallied around her.

“This is really the last step to Shannon being back to completely normal; so it's big,” Shannon’s mom Carol Curley said.

Back to normal means being a typical teen who can enjoy basketball where win or lose it's not a life battle, only a game.

“There have been thousands and thousands of really nice things done for our family. We'll spend the rest of our lives trying to it pay forward,” Shannon’s dad Chris Curley said.

Shannon said now that she’s in remission she’s happy to be back to basketball, back to school and back to singing.
