Sinkhole at Federal Courthouse in Boston

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BOSTON (WHDH) - A sinkhole opened up outside of the Moakley Federal Courthouse in South Boston Wednesday afternoon.

The sinkhole measures about 15 feet across and reaches a depth of nearly three feet in the middle.

Construction crews arrived on the scene and put up fencing around the area.

In the middle of the sinkhole is a drainage area where the surrounding brick has crumbled down. The area is popular during the summer months when it is open to the public and people often sit at benches in the area overlooking the harbor.

The General Services Administration manages the property and they said they are looking into the cause of the sinkhole.
