MIDDLEBORO, Mass. (WHDH) -
A fatal car accident on Route 44 in Middleboro left two people dead Tuesday.
Sky 7 was over the scene where two cars collided head on shortly after 1 p.m.
Route 44 was shut down for two hours while the State Police Reconstruction Team worked on the scene, to try to figure out what happened.
Police said the silver Toyota was driven by a man about 60 years old who apparently crossed over the center line. Police said a 31-year-old woman was behind the wheel of the dark green Buick.
“Initial reports look like the gray Toyota encroached into the other lane and struck the other car head on,” said Sgt. Todd Bazarewsky, Middleboro Police Department.
Police said there are no signs that alcohol played a role.
Witnesses said there was a loud crash and debris scattered everywhere.
“We heard this big, you know, crash. We jumped up and looked and all you see was parts coming out of the sky. It was falling out of the sky. The impact, like it blew up like an explosion,” said Fred DeMoranville, witness.
Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
The drivers have not yet been identified, but Middleboro police said the male driver is a veteran, who is known to police but not for criminal reasons.
The female driver is from out of state and officials said she had a dog traveling with her. The dog survived and was taken away by animal control.
