Green Line resumes normal service after derailed trolley

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - The MBTA announced early Tuesday morning that the Green Line was running on a normal schedule following Monday's trolley derailment.

The trolley is out of service and the MBTA is looking closely at the trolley operator. The driver of the trolley will be given a drug and alcohol test as part of the investigation.

"We're looking at everything from the actions of the operator to the signal system, the switches, the tracks, and anything else that may have played a role in this accident," said an MBTA spokesperson, Joe Pesaturo.

Speed is also a factor in the investigation.

Commuters captured the chaos moments after a Green Line trolley went off the tracks and smashed into a tunnel wall.

“It went off about 15 to 20 feet off of where the original track line was and then the back train kind of jackknifed it a little bit and smashed us into the wall,” passenger Caleb Dovel said.

Passengers onboard said after they hit the wall, a second trolley was right behind them, but it stopped short. Those passengers were unaware of what happened, but just knew everyone had to get off the T.

“They just said that you need to get off the train and the shuttle bus would come you and they would drive us to Kenmore and I don't know what else had happened,”

Ten people, including the driver, were taken the hospital, all with only minor injuries.

Once everyone was cleared from the tunnel, the MBTA worked to clear the tracks and restore service. The Green Line at Fenway was shut down during the evening commute Monday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
