Students react to UMass Amherst arrests

Posted: Updated:
AMHERST, Mass. (WHDH) -

Nearly 75 UMass Amherst students are due in court Monday after a pre-St. Patrick's Day celebration got out of hand.

Police said the arrests at the off-campus “Blarney Blowout” were related to severe alcohol intoxication, violent fighting, and sexual assault.

Officers dressed in full riot gear used pepper spray to try and control the crowds, but some students said the move wasn't necessary.

"Very over the top, unnecessary kind of reaction…It was just ridiculous. We were just standing there, having a good time and all of a sudden you hear those things start popping off and you get that weird taste in your mouth," one student said.

The school’s chancellor released a statement saying, “I want to make it unequivocally clear the University of Massachusetts Amherst condemns the outrageous behavior of those students who acted out without any regard for public safety and the community in which they live in. They have brought shame on our fine university...”

Four officers were hurt in their attempt to control those crowds.
