MARBLEHEAD, Mass. (WHDH) -

It was a race against time.

A Winthrop man swam 24 hours straight to raise money for a good cause.

Kim Garbarino raised more than $45 hundred for the North Shore YMCA. They money will go to swimming lessons for kids.

"Friends I have here, right here, are friends I met at the 'Y'. I got into swimming at the 'Y' and maybe some of the money that was donated here will be beneficial to some special kid, but not only that, a lot of kids," Garbarino said.

This isn't the 56-year-old's first big swim. He crossed the English Channel in 2012.
