What a day! Quite a bit of sunshine was able to hold on through the afternoon and the mid to upper 40s were able to turn into the lower to middle 50s for some, including the city of Boston which hit 55! After the cold stretch we’ve had to start the month, I’d say this break was well needed and well deserved as many were able to break the cabin fever and enjoy a nice Saturday outside.
I wish I could tell you winter weary folks that we’re turning the corner for the long haul here, but it’s just not in the cards. For you skiers… looks like the ski season will continue on. We’ll turn colder tonight with lows in the 20s and highs only in the 30s on Sunday. Now it’s not to say we can’t sneak in a mild day here and there, like we did today, but the overall pattern the next 7-10 days features more cooler than average weather and a couple chances for some snow.
The first chance for flakes arrives Monday morning. This is not a big storm by any stretch, but morning snow showers may drop a coating to an inch of snow for some, which is just enough to get the salters and sanders back out, and allow for a few slick spots early in the day. By late morning and afternoon, temps rise toward 40, so the slick spots are fairly quick to melt away.
Tuesday is one of those milder days we sneak in with highs in the lower 50s.
The better opportunity for a more widespread, significant precipitation event comes in here Wednesday midday, through Thursday morning. It still appears the configuration of upper-level energy in the northern branch of the jet stream, combining with energy from the southern branch, will be conducive to develop a storm in the Missouri and Ohio Valley, and project it toward the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Despite hitting the lower 50s on Tuesday, high pressure building back in from the north by Wednesday morning will start allowing colder air back into the picture, meaning we could be talking snow again for at least some of us. How much of that cold air gets back in will depend on the storm track and where the rain/snow/mix lines set up. This far out, the position of those lines and corresponding snow totals is still uncertain, but this is the time frame to check back in on for updates.
Bitter cold air does follow in Thursday night and Friday morning, before trending back toward average next weekend.
